Coronavirus (COVID-19) Illuminate Indy Updates

3-30-20 UPDATE

Greetings Illuminate Indy Community!

In continuing do our part to maintain a partnership with our authorities to help slow down and prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in our city, our Illuminate Indy leadership has determined that it would be best to cancel our scheduled BIG Easter Service. We will still plan on meeting via Zoom (for ZOOM CHURCH) on Easter Sunday, April 12th @ 10 am EST. To join us online, just go to Zoom.IlluminateIndy.com. We'll also open the Zoom meeting space online each week at 9:30 am EST for anyone who'd like to join and chat with others before we begin our service time together.

We also have the following updates to our Illuminate Indy Gatherings:
  • We will continue to suspend our in-person Community Group gatherings on Sundays through the entire month of April. Our hope is to be able to resume on May 3rd. We will keep you updated if circumstance forces that to be extended.
  • In lieu of meeting in person for our Groups, we have shifted to a Zoom Video Conference Call for our Sunday Community Group. Zoom is totally free to you, and can be used on any computer, tablet or mobile device. Zoom Church will begin at 9:30 am for Community time, with service starting at 10 am EDT, and will include all the elements of our in-person group (except the food—sad face). Tutorials for setting up Zoom on your device are listed below.
  • To join us for Zoom Church, just go to Zoom.IlluminateIndy.com
  • If you are unable to join us live on Sundays via Zoom, we will be recording the message portion and making it available for you to playback on-demand via our website and in our app.
  • Due to CDC recommendations and Indiana State closure of restaurants, etc., we are canceling all Bonus Groups for the month of April. Bible Reading Groups will also be utilizing Zoom Conferencing during this period of time. Contact your group leader for info regarding the meeting info

3-13-20 UPDATE

Greetings Illuminate Indy Community!

As you are by now certainly aware, the last few days have been an overwhelming flood of news, updates and cancellations within our state and the city of Indianapolis due to Coronavirus (COVID-19). I believe our response to this pandemic should not be one of fear, rather of wisdom and care for those in our churches and our communities as we consider and implement procedures that our Governing Leadership has put in place.

Our Indiana State Government has implemented a ban on gatherings of 250 or more. And while at the surface this seemingly does not apply to us, the CDC has recommended that individuals avoid close contact of group sizes of 30 or more during this time, which is also a contributing factor to the many school closures, and event cancellations we have seen throughout our city in the last 24 hours.

It’s with this information we have decided to partner with our state, county and city leadership’s recommendations to suspend meetings of our home-based Community Groups for March 15th and March 22nd. Our current plan is to resume gathering on March 29th.
Because our current Community Group’s size averages, and at most times exceeds, the 30-gathered mark in a close-space, we felt it was best to suspend these gatherings for a couple weeks to partner in preventing the further spread of this virus, and to protect our all ages within our Illuminate Indy Community.

Thankfully, we have made “Doing Church at Home” a part of our yearly church rhythm, and we are prepared to resource you in these next couple weeks! As we’ve done before, we will be prerecording our messages and posting them in the app and website, along with the session handout for you and your family to go through at home. If you feel comfortable with inviting others to join you in going through this, we want to remind you to follow the recommendations of the CDC and local authorities in personal hygiene and prevention of further spread of this virus.

Our weekly Bonus Groups (Bible Reading Groups, etc.) are currently still scheduled to continue throughout the next two weeks as they are much smaller in size. And while these take place in public spaces, we advise you to exercise caution in meeting. If you are concerned about this and feel like you need to stay home for a week or two - please be at peace. There is no reason for us to feel like we have a lack of faith if we are trying to be careful for ourselves and our family. Please hear me - be at PEACE.

In closing, I want to ask two things:
Will you be careful to not say or post things that could potentially put down others for walking this out? I understand that the media can spin things in such a way that it creates panic, however, there are people who are concerned because they are more vulnerable to a virus like this. Being sensitive is a healthy practice. Being fearful and panicking is not. There is a difference and I want to encourage us as a community to care about others and not just our own thoughts. Jesus spoke of the greatest commandment being that we love God and love our neighbors as we love ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). Loving others is to be mindful, active and prayerful on their behalf - that is what I am encouraging in this context and that is why we are taking some additional measures as a community of faith.

And Second, I want to conclude by asking you to partner with me in prayer. Please pray for the families that have lost loved ones all around the world. Pray for those who are currently sick in our city and beyond, to be healed, and pray for the miracle of the complete eradication of this sickness that is taking lives in great measure in other places. Lastly, pray for the opportunity to comfort people who are living in fear and do not have the hope and peace we have through Christ our Lord. May they see us as a servant church, full of compassion, care and love.
You are loved and it is a privilege to serve with you!
